Sudan is two years into a genocidal war. The conflict is backed by global and regional powers. Millions have been displaced or killed. Now, a Sudanese national medical authority has worked to recover the dead amid heavy fighting.

The Sudanese government troops and the Rapid Support Force (RSF) have been fighting for over two years. UAE backs RSF. Israel is also deeply involved in the war. The RSF are using some British equipment.

Middle East Eye (MEE) reported thousand of bodies have been located and reburied with dignity.

The Forensic Medicine Authority has:

collected and transferred 15,000 bodies from neighbourhoods and schools since April 2024.

A medical ministry source said RSF:

had forced civilians to bury their dead in neighbourhoods and schools while controlling several localities in the state.

Reporters on the ground said RSF:

prevented citizens from using cemeteries, forcing them to bury relatives in public squares, schools, mosques, and homes.

Heavy fighting prevented normal burials

MEE found that bodies were discovered in a university morgue RSF had taken over. Inside they found:

three tanks holding around 20 corpses. Some were badly decomposed, collapsing together into a dark morass.

There are makeshift grave sites all over the country:

Victims of atrocities have described seeing people buried alive, of streets strewn with corpses, of beds, blankets and mattresses used to drag bodies into squares, where they are then dumped.

RSF has killed six UN peacekeepers, allegedly. A drone attack on 15 December in Kordofan state wounded a further eight troops. UN chief Antonio Gutteres said the attacks may be a war crime.

The UAE’s role in Sudan is a significant factor in the war. UAE is a major buyer for British military equipment. Additionally, the US is still quietly using UAE’s network of military bases in the region. Britain, the US, the UAE and others are backing this war to the hilt. Like it or not, they’ve help fill the graves scattered across Sudan.
