Speaking at an extraordinary session of the organization’s Permanent Council in Washington, Torres stated that with his meddling in the elections held two weeks ago, Trump sent an intimidating message that undermined the popular will in this Central American country.
The Deputy Foreign Minister specified that, in his social media posts—72 hours before the start of the election—the US president explicitly supported the presidential candidate of the right-wing National Party, Nasry Asfura.
According to the diplomat, in his statements Trump warned Honduran voters that if they voted for the candidate of the ruling Liberty and Refoundation Party or for the Liberal Party’s opponent, Salvador Nasralla, the U.S. administration would cut off all aid to Honduras.
“We find it recurrent and alarming that the issue of direct interference in the Honduran elections continues to be omitted,” lamented Torres, alluding to the report presented by the OAS Electoral Observation Mission (EOM), which remained silent on this intrusion. The Deputy Foreign Minister also criticized the fact that the OAS observers did not address the issue of the violence that overshadowed the electoral process, with more than three million intimidating and threatening messages from gangs and criminal groups aimed at coercing voters.
In his opinion, the OAS Electoral Observation Mission report fails to mention that “of the 19,167 tally sheets used for the elections, 14,073 show inconsistencies with the biometric data (fingerprint reader).
In other words, it cannot be verified whether those votes actually correspond to people who went to vote,” explained the Honduran Undersecretary of Foreign Policy.
