The National Assembly of Venezuela unanimously approved the Law for Palestine and Humanity, Law Repealing the Rome Statute, in its second reading.

This law, passed on Thursday, Dec. 11, would allow Venezuela to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC), given “the futility of an institution that should serve to protect peoples but instead serves only the designs of US imperialism,” according to the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez.

Thus, Venezuela repeals the Law Approving the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, which was ratified by the Venezuelan government in 2000. “The Law Approving the Rome Statute of the ICC, published in Special Official Gazette No. 5,307 of December 13, 2000, is hereby repealed in its entirety,” the head of the parliament declared, before the bill was put to a vote.

He added that the approval of this law is a consequence of Venezuela’s condemnation of the genocide in Gaza committed by the Zionist entity and the silence of the ICC in this regard, as well as its silence amid the United States’ invasion threats and attacks against Venezuela.

Global Outcry as US Escalates Military Threats Against Venezuela

The first discussion of this bill took place on Dec. 2, when lawmakers underscored that the Repealing Law is an act of dignity in which Venezuela stands on the side of peace, as stated by Bussy Galeano, deputy of the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV).

Thereafter, on Dec. 9, a public consultation was held, with the participation of parliamentarians, jurists from across the country, representatives of social movements, and various sectors of society.

Once approved by the parliament, the bill will pass to President Nicolás Maduro for his approval and authorization for Venezuela to withdraw from the ICC.

Subsequently, it will be published in the Official Gazette as a Law of the Republic and will enter into force with immediate effect.
