There are more than 200 toxic substances in e-cigarettes, including nicotine, and carcinogenic compounds.

On Tuesday, the Mexican Senate approved reforms to the General Health Law that prohibit the production, sale, import, and export of electronic cigarettes, vapes, and similar devices.

The reform also prohibits advertising or promotion of these products. Manuel Huerta, president of the Legislative Studies Committee, emphasized that evidence shows a rapid increase in adolescent vape use.

The electronic vapes contain nicotine and toxic substances harmful to the lungs and cardiovascular system. Huerta clarified that with this bill, young people are not being criminalized, but rather distributors.

The norm was approved with 76 votes in favor and sent to the Federal Executive. However, the opposition argued that the reform would favor organized crime, creating a black market that would further endanger the health of Mexican youth.

In response, Huerta pointed out that the proposal strengthens enforcement against illicit trade, youth prevention campaigns, and evidence-based smoking cessation programs for adult smokers.

Green Party Senator Rocio Corona defended the reform, stating that it seeks to curb a “silent epidemic” disguised with “sweet flavors and colorful devices.” The opposition’s objections were rejected, and the bill sent by the Chamber of Deputies was approved without modifications.
