Beijing’s latest coast guard operation follows joint China-Russia bomber flights.
On Wednesday, a formation of China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels carried out a patrol in Chinese territorial waters off the Diaoyu Islands, which Japan calls “Senkaku.” This is the second operation of this kind in less than a month.

“This is a patrol operation to defend China’s rights and interests, carried out by the Coast Guard in accordance with the law,” Chinese authorities said through the social media platform WeChat.
Japan considers the Diaoyu Islands part of Okinawa Prefecture, while China claims them as a historic and inherent part of its territory.
This patrol, similar to one Beijing conducted in the same waters on Nov. 16, took place one day after Chinese and Russian bombers flew jointly around Japan between the islands of Okinawa and Miyakojima, an area that includes international waters and airspace.

Both episodes come amid heightened tensions between Tokyo and Beijing following comments last month by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who said a Chinese military attack on Taiwan could justify intervention by Japan’s Self-Defense Forces.
Beijing responded with economic and cultural pressure measures, including travel advisories for Japan, a ban on imports of Japanese seafood, and a halt to licenses for films and concerts from the neighboring country.
Tensions around the Diaoyu Islands are not limited to these types of law enforcement patrols. Earlier this month, the China Coast Guard expelled a Japanese fishing vessel it accused of “illegally” entering waters near the islands.
