Eileen Higgins was elected mayor of Miami City, marking the first time a Democrat has won the race since 1997. She defeated Republican former city manager Emilio Gonzalez with 59% of the votes; although he was backed by President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Miami — where Latinos make up 70% of the population — is part of Miami-Dade County, which U.S. President Donald Trump flipped in last year’s general election—a dramatic shift from his 30-point loss to Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Seventy percent of adult Latins in the U.S. disapprove of Trump’s second term, according to a bilingual survey conducted by the Observatory on Communication and Democracy of the Foundation for Latin American Integration.

A study by the Pew Research Center shows that the president’s loss of support within this demographic is linked to cuts in social spending included in the “Big Beautiful Bill” and new racially biased detention and deportation tactics.

With her runoff victory tonight, Eileen Higgins will be Miami’s next mayor—the first woman in the city’s history and the first Democrat in nearly 30 years elected to the office.

ICE Raids

Across the country, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has carried out arrests at workplaces, farms, university campuses, private homes, and even during routine traffic stops. The administration eliminated protections that once restricted raids in schools, hospitals, places of worship, and other sensitive locations.

These aggressive tactics have continued despite the president acknowledging they could harm the U.S. economy.
