Vanessa Johnston joins us today as our new video reporter. Based in Washington, D.C., Johnston is an award-winning video journalist and documentary filmmaker.
For nearly a decade, she worked as a producer at Reuters, covering major stories from the nation’s capital as well as reporting on issues spanning the economy, culture, labor, and the environment. Her work has included coverage of major news events, from presidential primaries and political conventions to the pope’s tour of Canada. Most recently, Johnston was a regular contributor to Voice of America. Her video work has also appeared on PBS, The Financial Times, and the BBC. A native of Wisconsin, she began her career as a radio reporter for Deutsche Welle in Germany and holds a graduate degree from Columbia University.
“I’m thrilled to bring my passion for visual storytelling to Civil Eats and the critical subject of the U.S. food system,” said Johnston. “I’m especially excited to spend time with people whose lives and work are shaped by these issues, and to help bring their stories to the screen.”
In 2022, Johnston received the Documentary Seed Fund Grant Award from Women in Film and Video for her feature on the pioneering World War II journalist Sigrid Schultz. It is expected to be distributed by PBS Plus for Women’s History Month in 2027. Recently, she directed and produced the short film BREAKING: From the Streets to the Olympics, which won the first gold Telly Award for Voice of America and a top award for best documentary on history and society at the New York Film Festival.
“We are very pleased to welcome Vanessa Johnston to Civil Eats,” Civil Eats Founder and Executive Director Naomi Starkman said. “At a time of consolidated, corporate media, we are grateful to expand and strengthen our newsroom. With her years of experience reporting from D.C. and beyond, Vanessa will help us reach new audiences and enrich our coverage in dynamic new ways.”
